One of the most common problems adults face is not getting enough sleep or not feeling refreshed/relaxed after waking up. This not only affects a person’s productivity, but also their mental and physical health. Lack of sleep creates hormonal disturbances as well as upsetting routines and leading to tiredness and apathy. So how does one go about making sure one gets a good night’s sleep, you say? Let us tell you:
Reduce smartphone/tablet/laptop usage before bedtime. In fact, it is advisable not to look at any screens one hour before bedtime, because the “blue light” emitted from these screens hinders the brain ability to release melatonin, which in turn hampers the body’s ability to regenerate and rejuvenate by sleeping. This results in an unsatisfying sleep at best, and inability to sleep at worst so make sure you put those smartphones away one hour before bed and settle in with a nice book or a pair of headphones to listen to some relaxing music.
Some people complain that they cannot sleep in complete silence and need to have some sort of continuous noise or ambient sounds to go to sleep. This noise/sound is called “white noise”, and many studies have shown how it is helpful in relaxing the brain and falling asleep, resulting in a pleasant, comfortable sleep and a positive feeling when one wakes up. You can find various apps for white noise and ambient sounds online. Try this if step 1 doesn’t work.
Set your body clock. Most people who have irregular sleeping hours experience tiredness, lack of appetite and mental fatigue. This is because their bodies have no set routines to follow and so cannot adjust to day to day changes. Setting your body clock is one of the most things you can do for your body and mind. By waking up and going to sleep at roughly the same time every day, you can train your body to perform better during waking hours and to regenerate efficiently during sleeping hours. Make sure your body clock is set properly.’
Change your bedding. We saved the best bit for last. Maybe none of the above apply to you and the problem lies with your choice of bedding. If you caught our last blog, you will remember that we said cotton is a better choice for bedding because it keeps you cool and takes away moisture from the body, ensuring an undisturbed, relaxing sleep. So if you’re using polyester cotton bed linens, you might want to change them with 100% cotton or Cotton Sateen for a cool, fulfilling sleep.
