One of the most commonly bandied about terms in fabric circles is “thread count”. It is the single most asked question by our customers. While thread count is undoubtedly one of the most important factors to consider when buying bed linen, it is not, as a rule of thumb, a precursor of comfort and quality. Our customers often ask us why we don’t make bed linens with thread counts 1000+. Our answer? Its not just about the thread count. Here is why:
The type of fibre used in the fabric is one of the first things you need to know about. Cotton polyester bed linens are popular because they don’t wrinkle that much, are more durable and relatively inexpensive compared to cotton fabrics. However, nothing compares to the clean, cool and soft feel of a 100% cotton bed sheet. Cotton bed sheets keep you cool because the fibres takes moisture (sweat) away from the body and make for a comfortable, relaxing sleep. Cotton bed sheets are also stain resistant, and release dirt easily during washing. The luxuriously soft feel of cotton fabrics is uniform in all cotton fibres but long staple cotton is known to be the best of the best.
The weave of a fabric determines how it looks, feels, lasts and its price. Some more information on this:
Thread count is important but as we said before, it’s not on its own the single most important thing about the fabric. A fabric with a lower thread count but higher quality thread will have more longevity, comfort and better feel along with resistance to wear and tear through washing as compared to a fabric with higher thread count but lower quality fabric.
There you have it. The technical stuff to consider when buying bed linens. Stay tuned to Nether Needles for more posts on bed linens.
